The Seward Rooster is dedicated to recovering transparency
in co-op governance, fostering deeper democracy, cultivating community, and practicing sustainability in a time of planetary climate crisis.

The Seward Rooster is a communications project of the members of Seward Community Co-op and is independent of the staff, board and management of the co-op. We are devoted to fair treatment of co-op employees and support their union.

World-renowned environmental leader and ecologist Vandana Shiva talks to Amy Goodman at Democracy Now! about battling the planet's One Percenters who have devastated agriculture in India and are driving the Sixth Mass Extinction with their GMO and chemical-based platform. Nobody Is the Enemy

by Betsy Barnum
posted January 21, 2019 on the Seward Rooster FB page

EXTRACT: "One important thing to understand is that everyone involved cares about Seward Co-op and wants it to succeed. Everyone involved is doing what they are doing out of a belief that the path they want to take is the best one for the co-op and its community.

"When we seem to have such different visions of what is best, sometimes it can be hard to remember that underneath it all, we really want the same thing. But I think it's critically important. . . .

"When we can be open and listen to each other, all of us, we can start to have the desperately needed dialogue about how to ensure a successful Seward Co-op. What, really, is the best path forward? How can a small store like ours survive in a market that is getting more competitive by the day? How can we activate our membership to greater participation economically and socially? How can we recommit to the co-op values of democracy, community, equity, diversity and local economics so they support a successful co-op in today's world that is so different from that of 1972 when Seward Co-op began?"

Thriving as a Co-op in a Corporate World

IMAGINING CO-OP VALUES RESTORED

by Betsy Barnum
posted 12/26/2018 on the Seward Rooster FB page

EXTRACT: "One of the most important issues on which I would like a "say" as a member of Seward Co-op is the question of how to have an economically successful co-op in the highly competitive market system of today. Should we be shaping the co-op to compete in this corporate-dominated market? Or could we be showing how a truly cooperative enterprise can not only survive but thrive alongside that system, presenting an authentic alternative to corporate capitalism?"

Some Union Advocates Have Concluded that Contrary to Public Protestations, Unions Are Rarely Welcomed by Co-op Boards and GM's.

Do Co-op Boards and GMs Ever Welcome Unions?

This scathing report is written by a union advocate and finds withering evidence that "co-ops hate unions," and management as a rule fights dirty. Seward Co-op is one of a dozen co-ops examined. What do you think?

READ SOMETHING that fires your rockets? Want to let the board know what you think? Email board@seward.coop. Of course, you can call the co-op too: Franklin store, 612-338-2465; Friendship store, 612-230-5595; Creamery cafe, 612-230-5575; administrative offices, 612-230-5555.

Coming soon: We will be compiling articles from the Rooster, including the FB page, on a separate page on this site for your reading pleasure. We're calling it The Seward Rooster Reader.

WE WANT letters from readers! Please use civil language, but otherwise, speak your mind!

Think about it: Just who are we? Isn't it time we had a good look at ourselves? Something like a co-op census? That's one of our deep desires.

In the future... We'd like to set up the Rooster on the lines of Twin Cities Daily Planet, so we can print stories and also allow comments and host blogs.

Have some fun while we're at it, too.

Check things out. 20,000 members? Really? How many active members do we have--i.e., who have shopped at Seward in the past 12 months?
